ARTFIGHT selections

Ever since 2018 I have participated in ARTFIGHT, a online drawing game/community that is all about drawing other people's characters. My interest in this stemmed from the idea that I would be able to draw all sorts of characters that I normally would have probably not drawn. Plus it's fun to draw things for other people!

Throughout the years, even though I have been drawing less, watching the progression my art has been personally fun to watch. I did at least one drawing a year. I'll include a short history of the years and my thoughts and goals on the art. It feels a bit funny to do this, but I think it's interesting.

Only 3 pieces. My goal was to play it a bit rougher, using a pencil brush and trying to scuplt an initial sketch into a final drawing. Colors were mostly done on a limited amound of layers as well. Both of these pieces feature characters tilting their head left. Oh well.

My goals were also to always situate a character in a scene, since I feel like most times characters are drawn floating in white voids. Won't someone get them out of that void?? There was no aspect ratio of the year.

Just 2 pieces this year, one for a friend and one for a character I stumbled upon. Both are done with clean lines, and my focus started to shift from the goal of drawing full bodies to drawing a good image. I'm especially proud of the image on the left, I think it's some of the cleanest 2D art I have made to date. I also targeted 4:3 as the aspect ratio of the year.

A measly 2 pictures. This was a year where I mostly worked in pencil again! I do some amount of post processing to images to this date but I sort of regret putting noise on these. A fun fact is I think maybe the picture on the left maybe put the seed in my head to work on the currently paused game Apple Seller. Aspect ratio of the year is 3:4.

Only one picture is year! I think I hadn't drawn any characters that were sort of clown-esque and figured it was the time. Mostly the last year I focused on doing tall pictures that were full body.

7 pictures this year, all with pencil brush! I feel like this is the year where I really felt my drawing skills crystallize into something I liked. Instead of staying too close to the reference, I felt like I could take some liberties with style.

I mostly drew pictures of friend's characters this year. I continued my trend of the year before of doing tall pictures in order to optimize it for a phone screen background. Aspect ratio of the year is mostly 9:16, except for the second one where I guess I drew the character too tall and resized the canvas instead of shrinking the drawing.

I really started doing blend modes and noise layers more, as well as making an effort to include some sort of background for each piece.

The middle picture actually just has a real photo from an airplane in the background. The last photo has the character mysteriously small in the frame. No aspect ratio of the year.

9 pictures this year, using a mix of styles, including 3D sculpture. This was my last year of explicitly doing style bingo, and I drew things from a sans, to a tokusatsu character, to an object show character. This is also my last year of making a simple cartoon character rendered in detail. The art is going to get more and more sloppy as we go back in time...

There's no aspect ratio of the year, and probably won't be from this point on. There's also no big focus on backgrounds- I hadn't really determined that as important for all pieces yet?

5 pictures this year. Very scattershot, and once again part of my style tourism. I did a sonic, a furry, something I considered newgrounds, and something I considered tumblr, amongst other things.

Rough stuff! It's interesting to look back at old art and see what habits I kept and what I dropped. I feel like I used to use that green blue pairing on that last picture a whole lot, before eventually moving on from it. It might come back.

This is the first year I did artfight, and I did 6 pieces. As I write this, It's been 8 years since doing these. It's the maiden voyage of my style cruise! I started a small habit this year of taking a very simple character and rendering it it over detail, something I thought was funny 8 years ago.

I feel like I have never really managed to shake a certain naiveite in my art, but that might just be something I am imagining. If you have an answer and it happens to be yes, you are holding a loaded gun.
